JAKARTA – The aluminium smelter owned by PT Alamtri Minerals Indonesia Tbk (ADMR), part of PT Alamtri Resources Indonesia Tbk (ADRO) controlled by businessman Boy Thohir, has begun exporting primary aluminium to international markets.
As reported by Reuters, the company made its first shipments to the United States and South Korea in June 2026.
According to data from trade platform Export Genius, PT Kalimantan Aluminium Industry (KAI), which operates in Kalimantan, shipped 31,494 metric tonnes of primary aluminium to the United States and 3,569 metric tonnes to South Korea during June.
The smelter entered the commissioning phase of its first production line at the end of last year, with an initial production capacity target of 500,000 tonnes of aluminium ingots per year, to be expanded gradually to 1.5 million tonnes.
The first export shipments come as the United States seeks alternative aluminium supplies after deliveries from Gulf countries were disrupted by the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The supply disruption pushed US aluminium premiums to a record high last month.
Earlier, around 18,500 metric tonnes of aluminium from a new Indonesian smelter developed by Chinese companies Tsingshan and Xinfa under the Juwan project were also shipped to the United States in March.
According to Export Genius data, Alamtri’s aluminium shipments to the United States were purchased by commodities trading company Mercuria.
The cargo departed Indonesia on 10 June and is currently en route to Brownsville, Texas.
Meanwhile, the shipment to South Korea was purchased by Vitol and is bound for Incheon after leaving Indonesia on 29 June.
South Korea has also long relied on aluminium supplies from smelters in the Gulf region.
An Alamtri spokesperson said the company’s aluminium smelter project had attracted strong interest from prospective customers.
The company is targeting aluminium ingot sales of up to 350,000 tonnes this year, with products to be sold in both the domestic and export markets. (DK/ZH)
