［ワシントン ２日 ロイター］ – 経営危機に陥っていた米格安航空会社（ＬＣＣ）のスピリット航空(FLYYQ.PK), opens new tabが２日、事業を停止した。イラン紛争をきっかけとしたジェット燃料価格の高騰に起因した米航空業界初の経営破綻となり、トランプ政権には打撃だ。
トランプ大統領は側近や共和党議員の反対を押し切り、５億ドルの拠出策を打ち出していたが債権者の支持が得られなかった。トランプ氏は１日、スピリット航空と債権者に対し最終的な救済案を提示したと述べた。だが同日開かれた取締役会は再建策で合意に達することなく終了したとされる。
スピリット航空は２日、「秩序ある事業の縮小」を発表。「最近の原油価格の大幅な上昇やその他の事業への圧力が財務見通しに著しい影響を与えた」と説明した。
スピリット航空は、春の終わりか夏の初めまでに２度目の破産手続きから脱却することで銀行と合意していた。しかしイラン紛争をきっかけとしたジェット燃料価格の高騰で計画に狂いが生じた。再建計画ではジェット燃料価格を２０２６年が１ガロン＝２．２４ドル、２７年は２．１４ドルと想定していたが、実際は４月末までに４．５１ドル前後に跳ね上がった。
Ｃｉｒｉｕｍのデータによると、スピリット航空は５月１日から１５日までに国内便４１１９便（座席数で８０万９６３８席）を運航する予定だった。
すでにユナイテッド航空、アメリカン航空、フロンティア航空、ジェットブル－は、スピリット航空が運航を停止した場合に予約者を支援する方針を示している。
