The Seoul High Court in South Korea handed down an appellate ruling of 5 years in prison to Kim Keon-hee (Kim Kun-hee), the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol (Yoon Seok-yeol), on the afternoon of September 22. This was a reduction from the 7-year prison sentence in the first instance ruling, and the court ordered the confiscation of the bribes and an additional collection of 24.4 million won (approximately 2.8 million yen).

The Seoul High Court, which handled the appeal, deliberated on many of the charges against defendant Kim, overturned the first instance guilty verdict for two charges, declaring her innocent, and upheld the first instance guilty verdict for the other charges.

South Korean prosecutors indicted defendant Kim on suspicion of receiving requests from construction companies and others regarding personnel matters and other issues during the period around former President Yoon’s inauguration, accepting valuables such as high-end jewelry, watches, brand-name bags, and paintings by famous artists, and using her position to provide favors.
