[ジュネーブ １８日 ロイター] – 米国とイスラエルが、パレスチナ自治区ガザで続く戦争を巡る国連職員の中立性に疑義を呈する書簡を国連幹部らに送付した。一方、スイス・ジュネーブにある国連欧州本部前では１８日、ガザでの活動中に同僚が死亡したことに抗議して職員数百人がデモを行った。
デモ参加者らは「ガザに平和を」「標的ではない」と書かれたプラカードを掲げ、慰霊碑の前に３７０本余りの白いバラを手向けた。バラは約２年に及ぶ戦争で死亡した国連職員と関係者を象徴するという。
国連難民高等弁務官事務所（ＵＮＨＣＲ）職員評議会のナタリー・メネ氏は、「われわれは『もうたくさんだ』と声を上げるためここに来た。これほどまでに無責任にガザで同僚が殺されることは許されない」と語った。
抗議書簡は、国連とその最大の資金拠出国である米国との緊張の高まりを示している。米国はすでに、「反イスラエル的」とする姿勢を理由に国連人権理事会から離脱している。
ロイターが確認した国連職員へのメッセージによれば、ニューヨークの国連本部で計画されていた追悼集会は許可されなかった。
イスラエルの在ジュネーブ国連代表ダニエル・メロン氏は、国連のバロバヤ・ジュネーブ事務局長に対し、１０日付の書簡で集会を事前に非難していた。
メロン氏は「国連職員は活動家でも政治関係者でもない。政治的活動を扇動したり参加したりする者には、停職を含む懲戒処分を科すべきだ」と述べた。
