［ワシントン ５日 ロイター］ – ヘグセス米国防長官は５日、米国とイランが原油輸送の要衝ホルムズ海峡の支配権を巡り争いを続ける中でも、イランと合意した停戦は続いているとの認識を示した。
ヘグセス氏はワシントンの国防総省で行った記者会見で、米国はホルムズ海峡の航路確保に成功したとし、数百隻の商船が同海峡の通過を待っていると主張。「イランはこの事実を恥じているとわれわれは認識している。イランはホルムズ海峡を支配していると表明しているが、実際は支配していない」と述べた。
イランとの停戦はなお有効かとの質問に対しては、「停戦は終わっていない」とし、「われわれは積極的に防衛すると表明してきたが、その通り実行している。イランもそれを理解している。停戦協定違反に見なされるまで事態がエスカレートしたかどうかは、トランプ大統領が最終的に判断する」と語った。
米軍制服組トップのケイン統合参謀本部議長は同じ記者会見で、４月７日に停戦が発表されて以降、イランは商船に対し９回の攻撃を行ったほか、コンテナ船２隻を拿捕（だほ）したと指摘。イランは米軍に対し１０回以上の攻撃を行ったとも明らかにした。ただ、こうした攻撃は「現時点で大規模な戦闘作戦を再開する水準には達していない」と述べた。
