Russia will adjust its military approach along the border with Finland due to the country’s membership in NATO, Russia’s Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday (5/9) in Svetogorsk, the Lendingrad region.
“However, we will prepare for the changes that occur and also in our relationship. Because we cannot ignore the fact that Finland is currently a member of the North Atlantic Alliance,” Medvedev told reporters, according to several comments published on Russia’s social media platform, VKontak.
“This determines changes in our military approach to border arrangements and the rejection of possible unfriendly actions,” he added.
The former head of state of Russia also targeted the Western-led “coalition of will”, which met in Paris on Thursday to discuss military support for Ukraine.
Medvedev called the initiative “empty”, saying: “This is nonsense, heretical teachings. What they do in English is a figment, let’s say,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who hosted the meeting, announced that 26 countries had confirmed readiness to send a military contingent to Ukraine after a ceasefire or peace agreement was reached.
During the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also present, with a total of 35 representing countries.
Medvedev also rejected the “security guarantee” proposal for Kiev, stating that it would be useless.
Finland officially joined NATO in April 2023, ending decades of military impartiality.
Its membership expands the alliance’s border region with Russia over 1,300 kilometers, and Moscow has repeatedly called the border area a security issue.
