[香港/ワシントン ５日 ロイター] – トランプ米大統領は先週韓国で中国の習近平国家主席と会談した際、収監中の香港メディア王の黎智英（ジミー・ライ）を釈放するよう直接要請した。事情に詳しい３人の関係者と米政府高官が明らかにした。
トランプ氏はライ氏の釈放に関して具体的な取引に言及しなかったが、７７歳の出版業界の大物の健康と福祉に関する懸念を広く述べたという。ライ氏は２０１９年の大規模な民主化デモの後に施行された香港国家安全維持法（国安法）違反の罪などに問われて長期裁判を受けている。
米政府高官は「トランプ氏はライ氏の件を取り上げると事前に述べていたように実際に言及した」と語った。
別の関係者は匿名を条件に「ライ氏の件はトランプ氏が持ち出し、習氏が認識した」と述べた。
この人物によると、トランプ氏はライ氏を釈放すれば米中関係にとって良い影響をもたらし、中国のイメージ向上につながるだろうと示唆したという。
ライ氏は廃刊された民主派タブロイド紙香港紙「蘋果日報（リンゴ日報）」の創設者で、外国勢力との共謀２件と扇動的な資料の出版共謀１件について無罪を主張している。家族や人権団体によると、１７００日以上にわたって独房に収容されている。
トランプ氏は会談前にライ氏の件を取り上げる意向を示していたが、両国は会談後の発表でこの件に触れていない。
ホワイトハウスはトランプ氏が会談でライ氏について言及したかどうかについての質問にコメントを控えた。
