［ワシントン ２日 ロイター］ – 米軍制服組トップのケイン統合参謀本部議長は２日、イランに対する軍事作戦「猛烈な怒り」について、米軍の目的達成には時間がかかり、さらなる攻撃も予想されると述べた。
ケイン氏は記者団に対し「一夜にして終わる作戦ではない」とし、「場合によっては非常に困難なものになるだろう」と語った。米国が中東地域への追加部隊の派遣を継続していると明らかにした。
ケイン氏はまた、米国側の犠牲者が増えることが見込まれるとの考えを示唆。米軍は損失を最小限に抑えるよう努力するが「これは大規模な戦闘作戦だ」と述べた。
ケイン氏と共同記者会見に臨んだヘグセス米国防長官は、軍事作戦の長さを決めるのはトランプ大統領とした上で、作戦が一夜にして完了することはないことを認めつつも、「これはイラクではない。終わりのない戦争」にはつながらないと強調した。
作戦の目的がイランのミサイル、海軍、その他の安全保障関連インフラの破壊だとも述べた。
米軍は２日、イラン攻撃が行われるなか４人目の米軍兵士の死亡が確認されたと発表。戦闘中のＦ１５戦闘機３機がクウェートの防空システムにより誤って撃墜され、乗組員６人が負傷したことも明らかにした。
