“ESPRIT C. KEI GINZA” is a restaurant that blends French and Japanese cultures, created by Kei Kobayashi, owner-chef of “Restaurant KEI,” and the traditional Japanese confectionery shop “Toraya.”
Based on the concept of a “hidden gem,” the collaboration between “tradition and innovation” is expressed through symbolic ceiling designs. In the reception hall, a checkered ceiling made of domestic cypress welcomes visitors, and as one proceeds further, countless cypress rods and acrylic light rods rise, transforming the traditional design into a three-dimensional, innovative installation.
The open kitchen features custom lighting that blends horse chestnut wood and resin, layering cutting-edge lighting effects over the texture of natural materials. In the Permanent Drain Reinforcement area, the team turned the ceiling height restrictions imposed by mechanical requirements into an advantage, stylizing exposed piping to create a space that emphasizes creativity reminiscent of a “research laboratory.” By fusing tradition and innovation through materials, the design establishes a unique worldview where Japanese and French aesthetics resonate in harmony.
