JAKARTA – US President Donald Trump said all trade negotiations with Canada were stopped. The reason Trump was offended by what he called a fake advertisement in which the late President Ronald Reagan spoke negatively about tariffs.
Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automotive earlier this year, prompting Ottawa to retaliate. Both sides have been negotiating for weeks on potential deals for the steel and aluminum sectors.
“Based on their very bad behavior, ALL TRADING NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA HAVE BEEN STOPPED,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Ontario’s Prime Minister, Doug Ford, said earlier this week advertising from his province containing anti-tariff messages had caught Trump’s attention.
The ad features Reagan, a Republican, criticizing rates for foreign goods while saying the tariff caused the loss of employment and trade war.
“I heard the president hear our ads. I’m sure he’s not very happy,” Ford said on Tuesday.
Presidential Foundation Ronald Reagan issued a statement late Thursday declaring ads from the Ontario government “using selective audio and videos” from Reagan and the foundation.
“The agreement misinterpreted the President’s Radio Speech (by Reagan in 1987), and the Ontario Government did not ask for or receive permission to use and edit the statement,” the foundation said in a statement.
Trump has used tariffs as a bargaining chip against many countries around the world.
Trump’s trade war has raised the US rate to its highest level since the 1930s and he has regularly threatened to impose higher import duties, sparking concern among businesses and economists.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters on Thursday Canada would not allow unfair US access to his market if negotiations on various trade deals with Washington failed.
Next year, the US, Canada and Mexico will review their 2020 continental free trade agreements.
