EU urged to reassess ban on Russian gas amid supply uncertainty.

JAKARTA – The European Union has been urged to review its plan to ban imports of Russian gas amid ongoing uncertainty in global energy supply.

Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Eni, said the bloc needs to reconsider its policy of phasing out Russian gas imports, which is scheduled to begin next year.

As reported by Reuters, he noted that it remains unclear how Europe will replace around 20 billion cubic metres of LNG currently sourced from Russia.

Under current plans, the EU will ban Russian LNG imports via short-term contracts starting 25 April, and long-term contracts from 1 January 2027.

Descalzi added that the Iran conflict has disrupted global energy shipments and represents one of the most significant shocks to supply in recent decades.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran has further tightened global LNG supply, as roughly one-fifth of global shipments typically pass through the route.

This has driven gas prices higher and worsened supply outlooks.

Meanwhile, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas has warned that the Middle East conflict is limiting Europe’s ability to refill gas storage, which earlier this month fell to its lowest level since 2022. (DK/ZH)
