In October 2025, France 24 released a video exploring the tomato industry in Morocco. The reporting highlights abusive conditions experienced by undocumented migrant workers on farms supplying to European markets.
Amid labour shortages in the country, the report says several companies in Agadir hire undocumented farmworkers from sub-Saharan Africa, including Ivorian, Senegalese, and Ghanaian workers. These workers are allegedly subjected to exploitative working conditions. In an interview, two undocumented migrant farmworkers who harvest vegetables exported to Europe allege poor working conditions, including spraying pesticides without protection, leading to illness. The migrant workers describe their work as ‘exhausting’.
The blurb to the video says “Franco-Moroccan company Azura faces accusations of exploiting migrant workers on its ultra-modern farms”. In the video, the company allows the journalists to film in its warehouse, where 4,000 workers are employed and where machines are used to reduce costs. When asked if the firm is “undermining the market”, the company said it has a “powerful weapon for maintaining good prices for consumers”.
The reporting also explores other alleged issues with the industry, including substantial water shortages due to intensive farming.
