Mount Iwate is a mountain that the people of Iwate always look up to. Standing at 2,038 meters above sea level, the locals are proud of this beautiful sight. Mount Iwate is an active volcano that has been erupting repeatedly for 700,000 years, and has undergone seven major sector collapses to reach its current form. The large amount of volcanic ash and rocks that fell created vast foothills of the mountain. In this episode, we take a look at people living in the embrace of Mount Iwate.

Behind the Headlines at Ofunato’s Local Newspaper

A small newspaper company with 30 employees in the city of Ofunato, Iwate Prefecture, which was devastated by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami, has been a valuable source of local news for 65 years. A team of seven reporters, many of whom are from the region, uncover and write stories of interest to residents. For three days, we went on assignment with these reporters and behind the scenes at the office as they prepared newspapers issued around the disaster’s 12th anniversary.

Awaji Island is known for ornamental roof tiles called “onigawara.” The artisans who make these tiles are known as “onishi.” Okitsu Naoko is an apprentice of the craft who trains daily to become a full-fledged artisan. She and her husband, the onigawara workshop’s president, eat udon noodles for lunch virtually every day. The quick and easy lunch allows for Naoko to spend her time honing her skills. We also visit a forestry academy to see what the trainees eat for lunch outside in the snow. (Iwate)

A workshop in Iwate Prefecture has been making traditional Nambu ironware kettles for decades. After taking over the business from his master-craftsman father, Tayama Takahiro decided to rethink the work environment. To attract younger applicants, he replaced grueling schedules and long apprenticeships with 5-day workweeks and paid time off. And he designed a simple kettle that can be produced by less-experienced artisans. But there are bumps along the way and Takahiro must learn to adapt.
