［ワシントン ６日 ロイター］ – 米ホワイトハウスは６日、トランプ大統領と顧問らがデンマーク自治領グリーンランド取得の選択肢について協議しており、目標達成に向けた米軍の活用は「常に選択肢の一つ」と明らかにした。
ホワイトハウスはロイターの取材に対し声明で「トランプ大統領は、グリーンランド取得が米国家安全保障上の優先事項で、北極圏での敵対勢力抑止に不可欠と明言している」と説明。「トランプ大統領とそのチームはこの重要な外交政策目標の追求に向けて多岐にわたる選択肢を協議しており、無論、米軍の活用は常に最高司令官（大統領）の裁量に委ねられた選択肢の一つだ」と述べた。
ある米政府高官は、グリーンランドを支持する北大西洋条約機構（ＮＡＴＯ）首脳らのけん制もトランプ氏には効かず、残り３年の任期中にグリーンランドを獲得しようとする同氏の意欲はなくならないと述べた。
同高官は匿名を条件に、米国がグリーンランドを完全に買い取るか、グリーンランドと自由連合協定を結ぶかの選択肢があると述べた。購入価格については言及しなかった。
高官は「外交は常に大統領の最初の選択肢であり、取引だ。グリーンランドを手に入れるために良い取引ができれば、それが大統領の第一選択であることは間違いない」と述べた。
米紙ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル（ＷＳＪ）によると、ルビオ国務長官は議員らに対し、グリーンランドに対する最近の政権の意欲は差し迫った侵攻を意味するものではなく、デンマークからグリーンランドを買い取ることが目的だと語った。
一方、共和党のドン・ベーコン下院議員は、グリーンランドを公然と欲しがるのをやめるようトランプ政権に要求。ＣＮＮに「彼らに対するわれわれの接し方は自らを卑しめるものであり、何のメリットもない」と話した。
