This package was developed as part of the Inter-University Exchange Project, supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), under the initiative “Support for Building Systems to Accept and Retain International Students from ASEAN Countries.” The project aims to create a seamless recruitment environment—from admission to post-graduation career support—and to provide high-quality English-language educational content, thereby strategically attracting outstanding students from ASEAN countries.

Ibaraki University have developed English-language course content for graduate students, based on our long-standing efforts in education, research, and social implementation related to integrated climate change science.

For information on how to apply, please refer to the admissions guide. We welcome a wide range of participants, including students from both Japan and abroad, as well as working professionals. Students from Ibaraki University’s partner institutions should contact relevant office at their home institution.

Ibaraki University’s Climate Change Initiatives and ASEAN Collaboration

Ibaraki University has long been engaged in education, research, and social implementation in environmental science, particularly focusing on lake ecosystems. In 2006, the university established the Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS) to promote interdisciplinary sustainability studies. In 2020, ICAS was reorganized into the Global and Local Environment Co-creation Institute (GLEC) through integration with the Center for Water Environment Studies (CWES). That same year, GLEC received the Minister of the Environment’s Award for Climate Action.

Both ICAS and GLEC have focused on climate change adaptation, conducting fieldwork and implementation projects in Southeast and South Asia. These efforts led to Ibaraki University becoming the lead institution for the Master’s Program in Climate Change and Development (MCCD) at Vietnam Japan University, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VJU), launched in 2018. The university has also strengthened ties with ASEAN countries through double degree programs with universities in Indonesia and Thailand, particularly in the field of agricultural sciences.
