From Florence, Italy. On demolition of Kagawa Boat Museum: a proposal

Good morning,

I am a professor of Architectural Design at DIDA, the Department of Architecture at the University of Florence.

I have been to Takamatsu on many occasions and have always visited the Kagawa Boat Museum with my students, whilst following with concern the developments surrounding its demolition.

I have read the online contributions you published about the Boat Gymnasium.

Now that the suspension of demolition work has ended, I am extremely concerned.

Together with my business partner, architect Yoichi Sakasegawa who reads us in copy, we have drawn up a proposal to try to stimulate debate and raise awareness about the Kagawa Gymnasium within the academic architectural community here in Italy as well.

We will present it at a major architecture conference to be held here at the University of Florence in December and publish it in the symposium catalogue.

The proposal is based on one premise: if it is not possible to secure the budget to bring the Gymnasium into line with anti-seismic regulations, rather than demolishing it, let us instead regard it as a relic of a glorious past. A “sculpture” celebrating Kaneko Masanori, Tange Kenzo and his team of collaborators.

Given the demolition work taking place on the outdoor forecourt, why not take this opportunity to revitalise and transform the space around the Gymnasium into a water square?

By saving on demolition costs, it would be possible to construct the base of the pool and the associated oxygenation and water recirculation systems.

In short, at little cost, we could conceptually return the ‘boat-shaped gymnasium’ to the Seto Inland Sea, transforming a peripheral site – currently visited only by architecture enthusiasts – into a destination that can also be enjoyed by the many tourists who come to Takamatsu for the Setouchi Art Triennale: daytime and nighttime, with a proper illumination.

This would preserve the legacy of an iconic piece of architecture whilst simultaneously enriching Takamatsu’s tourist offering.

I do not know whether this contribution of ours, if publicised in the local media, might halt the demolition work. We hope so.

In any case, we want you to know that there is a great deal of solidarity in Italy for your efforts to save this extraordinary work of architecture.

We are looking forward to hearing from you  soon. Please let us know what you think about this proposal. Is it weird or does it make sense?

Best regards,
