NAMIE, Fukushima － A pottery producer in Fukushima Prefecture has launched a project to collect VHS video tapes lying idle in homes affected by the accident at a nuclear plant following the Great East Japan Earthquake.
福島県浪江町―福島県の陶器業者が、東日本大震災に伴う原子力発電所事故の被災家屋に眠っているVHSビデオテープを回収するプロジェクトに乗り出した。
The project, dubbed “Fukushima Memory,” was launched by Matsunaga Gama, a pottery producer that specializes in a traditional craft called Obori Soma-yaki and was formerly based in Namie in the prefecture. The pottery studio was forced to move to Nishigo in the same prefecture following the nuclear accident that occurred at Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc.’s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
「福島メモリー」と名付けられたこのプロジェクトは、伝統工芸「大堀相馬焼」の窯元で、かつて同県浪江町を拠点としていた「松永窯」が始めた。同窯は、東京電力福島第１原発の事故により、県内の西郷村への移転を余儀なくされた。
The initiative involves collecting video tapes from homes located across the coastal area of Soso and digitally preserving them. The goal is to ensure that footage of people’s daily lives before the disaster is preserved to pass on to future generations.
この取り組みは、相双地方の沿岸地域の各家庭からビデオテープを収集し、デジタル化して保存するというもの。その目的は、災害前の人々の日常生活を記録した映像を確実に保存し、次世代に継承することにある。
By digitizing VHS tapes onto DVDs and playing the preserved images at screenings and exhibitions both within and outside the prefecture, the project operator hopes to create opportunities for people to share the memories of their hometown.
プロジェクトの運営者は、VHSテープをデジタル化してDVDに保存し、保存された映像を県内外での上映会や展覧会で公開することで、人々が故郷の思い出を共有する機会を創出したいと考えている。
VHS was once widely used for home recording, but video playback devices are no longer produced and VHS tapes themselves have been deteriorating over time.
VHSはかつて、家庭での録画に広く利用されていたが、現在は再生機器の生産が終了し、VHSテープ自体の経年劣化も進んでいる。
In disaster-stricken areas, prolonged evacuations have led to the demolition of dilapidated homes. This has led to the disposal of VHS tapes, which are often filled with family memories, creating a risk that precious memories could be lost.
被災地では、避難生活の長期で老朽化した家屋の取り壊しが進む。それにより、家族の思い出が詰まったVHSテープが廃棄されるケースも生じており、大切な思い出が失われてしまう恐れがある。
Matsunaga Gama operates the Matsunaga Togeikan (pottery museum), a privately run gallery that displays preserved remnants left behind by the disaster. The facility is located at its former studio in Namie.
松永窯は、震災の爪痕を保存・展示する私設ギャラリー「松永陶芸館」を運営する。同館は、浪江町にあるかつての工房に設けられている。
For the VHS preservation project, Matsunaga Gama has outsourced the task of digitizing the collected VHS tapes to “Tokugy Minami-Soma,” a type B work-support facility for people with disabilities in Minami-Soma, thereby providing vocational assistance. The project offers to preserve and digitize up to 120 minutes of footage onto one DVD for 1,000 yen.
松永窯はVHS保存プロジェクトの一環として、収集したVHSテープをデジタル化する作業を南相馬市の就労支援B型事業所「トクギー南相馬」に委託し、障害者の就労支援にもつなげている。プロジェクトでは、最大120分までの映像を1枚のDVDにデジタル化して保存するサービスを1000円で提供している。
Shunto Yamanaka, 25, who oversees the project, is working tirelessly to collect valuable video footage. “We want to carry on the culture deep-rooted in our community,” he said.
プロジェクトを統括する山中俊人さん（25）は、貴重な映像を収集しようと精力的に取り組む。「地域に深く根付いた文化を継承していきたい」と彼は話した。
Izumi Ishibashi, 59, who runs Rean, a second hand store and gallery in Namie, entrusted the project with 11 VHS tapes that her parents, who evacuated to the city of Fukushima, had retrieved from their home before it was demolished.
浪江町でリサイクルショップ兼ギャラリー「り庵」を営む石橋いづみさん（59）は、福島市へ避難した両親が自宅を取り壊す前に持ち出したVHSテープ11本を、プロジェクトに託した。
Although six of the tapes could not be digitized due to deterioration, five were successfully transferred onto DVD.
テープのうち6本は劣化してデジタル化できなかったが、5本は無事にDVDに転送することができた。
Precious memories, including her wedding ceremony held in Sydney, have now been digitally preserved, along with family trips and footage from the local Ukedo beach before the quake. Her younger brother’s wedding ceremony, which took place at Mukadeya, a hotel that once stood in the town, was also digitized.
シドニーで行われた自身の結婚式をはじめ、家族旅行や震災前の地元の請戸海岸の映像など、大切な思い出の数々がデジタルデータとして保存された。かつて町内にあったホテル「百足屋」で行われた弟の結婚式の映像も、同様にデジタル化された。
”I’d forgotten that I even recorded them,” said Ishibashi, watching the videos happily. “I’m grateful that I can have these memories brought back to life.”
