［ワシントン １７日 ロイター］ – トランプ米大統領は１７日、米国の対イラン軍事作戦について、北大西洋条約機構（ＮＡＴＯ）加盟国の大半が「関与したくない」との意向を通達したと明らかにし、原油輸送の要衝ホルムズ海峡の封鎖解除に米国を支援しようとしないＮＡＴＯは「極めて愚かな過ちを犯している」と非難した。
ただ、ＮＡＴＯ加盟国に対する報復措置を取る考えは現時点ではないと述べ、制裁などの検討は示唆しなかった。
トランプ氏は自身の交流サイト（ＳＮＳ）「トゥルース・ソーシャル」への投稿で、中東で進めている対イラン軍事作戦を巡り、ＮＡＴＯ加盟国の多くが作戦自体には強く賛同し、イランがいかなる形でも核兵器を保有することは容認できないとの認識を共有しているものの、ＮＡＴＯ加盟国の大半が関与を望まない意向を米国に通達したと明らかにした上で、米国が年間数千億ドル規模の防衛負担を担っているにもかかわらず、ＮＡＴＯ加盟国は米国が必要とするときに協力しないと非難した。
その上で、米軍はイラン軍を「壊滅させた」と主張。ＮＡＴＯ加盟国のほかに日本、オーストラリア、韓国を挙げ、「米国はもはやＮＡＴＯ加盟国の支援を必要としていないし、望んでもいない。そもそも必要としたことは一度もない！」とし、「米国は世界で最も強力な国家だ。いかなる国の支援も必要としない」と記した。
トランプ氏はその後、ホワイトハウスの大統領執務室で、ＮＡＴＯ加盟国は米国の取り組みには支持を示しているものの、イランに対する軍事作戦には関与しない姿勢を示していることで「極めて愚かな過ちを犯している」と改めて非難。「誰もがわれわれに賛同しているものの、支援しようとはしない。米国としては、このことを記憶しておく必要がある。かなり衝撃的だ」と語った。
ＮＡＴＯ加盟国の消極姿勢にどのように対応するかとの記者団からの質問に対しては、現時点では「何も考えていない」と述べた。
